Table of Difference
Difference |
Quartz Heater |
Halogen Heater |
HOW DOES IT WORK? |
It heats up the surrounding areas by radiating the heat from its coils. The coils are made of the element Quartz. |
It works by radiating heat from the Halogen tubes. But the heating efficiacy is higher as the light emmited by these tubes is higher (almost double). |
Energy Consumption |
Almost Similar (400 W to 1200W) |

5 Factors to help you choose between HALOGEN & QUARTZ
1. Budget – Quartz ranks higher
If you are on a tight budget, the Quartz heater is the way to go. However, do keep in mind that the Halogen Heater though costlier initially generates more heat and is thus more effective. Check out our article on quartz heaters to learn more. Here we explain what are quartz heaters and how quartz heating works.
2. Lifespan – Halogen ranks higher
The Halogen Tubes have a longer lifespan as compared to the Quartz Heater. They will thus prove to be economical in the longer run.
3. Application – Both are similar
Both these heaters are effective up to 10 to 12 feet. Thereafter the heating is not too strong for large spaces and the heat dissipates
4. Safety – Both are similar
Both require high caution on use. As they offer high levels of heat, they can be dangerous and due precaution must be taken. If the heat is concentrated on any nearby objects for too long it can lead to a fire.
5. Speed – Halogen ranks higher
They heat up instantaneously, but be aware that the heat is lost almost instantaneously after the heater is switched off. Halogen Heaters generate more heat.
A Heater better than both Halogen & Quartz
Carbon Heaters are also infrared Heaters, but they minimize some of the issues of the Quartz and Halogen Heaters while still giving instant heat. Some of its features are:
- The rods are made of Carbon.
- The light glow is much softer and thus makes it more suitable for night use.
- These rods have a higher lifespan as compared to both the Halogen and Quartz Heater.
- The carbon heaters emit infrared heat which disinfects and alleviates sore muscles.
- Higher heating efficiency.
Alternative to Halogen & Quartz
By now you are well aware of the cons of all the infrared heaters. They are neither child-friendly nor great around asthma patients. They cause dryness and they are a safety hazard.
Well, if these heaters do not seem suitable for your needs, there is n need to compromise. You can explore the other variants of heaters available.
- Fan or Ceramic Heaters.

Similarities between Halogen & Quartz
If you have read the above paragraphs carefully, you must have noticed that:
- Both are infrared heaters. They function by radiating their heat onto the objects and people around them.
- Both use tungsten as the filament. In halogen heaters, the filament is surrounded by halogen gas to extend the lifespan of the bulb. In quartz heaters, the tungsten filament is enclosed by quartz to prevent the bulb from getting melted.
Precautions for Use
- Keep out of reach of children or pets.
- Keep furniture and other objects at least 2 to 3 feet away from the heater.
- Do not use if asthmatic or suffering from any other respiratory disorder.
- Allergy-prone people should also avoid.
Quick Tip: Use a Humidifier
All the infrared heaters use up the oxygen in the air to produce heat. They also cause dryness as the humidity levels go down considerably while we use these heaters.
The best way to counter these side effects is by installing a HUMIDIFIER along with your infrared heaters. In fact some heater come with an inbuild Humidifier like the AquaOasis Cool Mist Humidifier & the LifeSmart HT1013 High Power Quartz Heater.
